LearnLoop began with a simple observation: teachers were spending a lot of time grading. De Jonge Akademie identified the growing workload in education. In response, the Dutch Ministry of Education (OCW) launched the “Een Slimmer Collegejaar” initiative from which LearnLoop emerged. This is of how we are addressing the workload challenge with Eval, our AI grading assistent.

How the idea our AI grading tool emerged

The idea for Eval came from conversations with educators while building an AI tool to support learning through dialogue. In these conversations, we realized that teachers need tools that save them time rather than take more of their time. A recurring theme quickly became clear: grading was taking up too much of theachers' time. With backgrounds in Industrial Design (TU Delft), AI (University of Amsterdam), and Mechanical Engineering (TU Eindhoven), our founding team mapped the grading process and developed the AI mechanisms and rubric-based evaluation systems behind our AI grading tool called Eval.

AI in Education within the “Een Slimmer Collegejaar” initiative

The Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science (OCW) launched the “Een Slimmer Collegejaar” (which translates to Smarter Academic Year) initiative to reduce workload peaks, improve effective learning time for students, and make education more sustainable. LearnLoop originated from this initiative. LearnLoop's tool, Eval, explores how artificial intelligence in education can ease teachers’ workload in grading while maintaining the quality of assessment.

What teachers tell us about grading with Eval

Early users indicate that Eval can help them save time while keeping them in control of grading. Cecilia: "I let Eval grade the work, then I check Eval and ask questions via chat." Thijs: "Some parts I grade completely with Eval, others I like to grade myself; Then Eval is nice as a check." Together, these reflect our goal: to support teachers, not replace them, giving flexibility and maintaining teacher control. By working closely with teachers, we shape Eval the way they want to use it.

Our vision: Human-in-the-loop grading with AI

We believe teachers are and should remain the content experts in assessing student work. At the same time, we recognize that the grading process can take up a lot of time. Our vision is an human-in-the-loop AI grading tool to support not replace educators.
